3 "Crossings", an event with the Aurea Ensemble celebrates the deep and surprising connections between Eastern and Western cultures, from ancient times through the present. In a rich tapestry of readings and music, this cross-cultural collaboration includes works for pipa and string quartet by Zhu-Jian’er and Lou Harrison, alongside music of Maurice Ravel, Bright Sheng and Michio Mamiya. A highlight of this program is the collaborative presence of Yang Wei, internationally acclaimed pipa virtuoso and member of Yo-Yo Ma’s famed Silk Road Ensemble. Developed with support from the Aaron Roitman Chamber Music Fund, Rhode Island Foundation. 10 Brahms Clarinet Quintet with clarinetist Ray Jackendoff at Tufts University. Jackendoff is a linguist, philosopher, and musician extraordinaire, Seth Merrin Professor and clarinetist. Jackendoff presents an evening of chamber music featuring one of his favorite works: the Clarinet Quintet, Op. 115 by Johannes Brahms. 12 String Trios of Mozart, Dohnanyi and Bach with the Aurea Ensemble. The progam Where Everything is Music is taken from Coleman Barks’ Rumi translation of the same name, underscores the ineffable connection between words, music, humanity and nature, weaving readings, chamber music, and harmonica improvisations of Chris Turner. An excellent introduction to contemporary poetry, this charming and audience-friendly program includes poetry and translations with strong musical connotations, paired with an eclectic mix of musical styles, from Bach to the present for String Trio. The program includes Mozart transcriptions of Bach three part inventions; Mozart Divertimento; Dohnanyi Serenade; improvisations of Chris Turner; poetry of Rumi, Mary Oliver, Lisel Mueller, Billy Collins, RW Thomas and May Sarton.
